Handmade. One of a kind. The horsehair reduction technique gives a dramatic visual result on a vessel that has been burnished with terra sigillata or fine clay particles. This process creates a striking contrast of black and white in bold patterns. The pottery is fired in a kiln to 1500-1600 degrees, pulled from the kiln with tongs, and horse hair is placed on the piece. The hair burns, creating a local reduction and enabling the artist to "draw" directly onto the surface. The surface is cooled, cleaned and either waxed or sprayed with a clear spray to bring out the beauty.
